The Power of Parable…
VIRTUE WORKS has adopted St. Ignatius as our patron. When he was a zealous young knight and badly injured during a battle, he convalesced at a monastery. He wanted to read nothing but “pop culture” books while he was laid up. However, there were only 2 holy and virtue filled books available. What he read during that period of his life, changed his life forever because it was limited and directed in a holy and spirit filled way. Subsequently, God gave us the Jesuits, Universities, “Black Robe” Missionaries who brought heroic faith to America and our Jesuit Pope Francis. All because of stories this man read in a book.
The power of a well told parable is undeniable. It seems that God hardwired humanity to love, and learn best from, stories. Jesus himself chose parables as His preferred teaching style. The most memorable part of many sermons, lessons and beloved family histories are the stories. There is a deep desire in us to experience parables as the heart of how we instruct and learn. Often it is the story itself that is the best of teachers. Even in antiquity, Plato advised,
All of us love a well told tale. Storytelling that has the added bonus of faith and virtue within it is like handing your soul a book to read with a $1,000 bill as a bookmark. To keep. And surprisingly, virtue can flow from both sacred and secular storytelling. As so much modern entertainment is either morally tepid or spiritually toxic, we need help sifting through the plethora of choices to find the fare that is spiritually valuable. VIRTUE WORKS is here to help everyone find and enjoy the visual and print media from both religious and non-religious sources that offers spiritual richness for the soul!
